SØS Gunver Ryberg travelled to the Arctic Wilderness, near the North Pole, to record different arctic sounds and video for her work as a sound artist and different media. Her project is exploring inner and outer nature.
This site presents the 1. part of the project - the sound and video installation ARCTIC between 74º N - 81º N.
Several compositions are coming for installations, concerts and CD.
Read a description of the installation ARCTIC between 74º N - 81º N in both English and Danish.
Explore some pictures from the artistic research expedition recording arctic sound.
This 1. part of the project has been exhibited at the Danish Ministry of Culture, The COP Kreativ at The Royal Danish Academy of Fine Arts, School of Architecture at Holmen/CPH, "Bright Green Youth" climate conference in Sønderborg.

ARCTIC between 74º N - 81º N, (2009)
SØS Gunver Ryberg, born 1979
The longest night has passed. The silent arctic wilderness is alive under the midnight sun.
Small air bubbles revealing the ancient atmosphere make the 1500-year-old melting glacier ice fizzing and crackling before it joins the blue ocean.
You are the scientist inside the body of the glacier with the sound of the pulse and the blood vessels circulating with burning ice water.
SØS Gunver Ryberg explores arctic natural sounds of melting glacier ice, snow and the sea in her sound and video installation. Frozen, melting and liquid forms are under her acoustic magnifying glass.
In the composition the sound recordings are used in their unprocessed and processed form like musical sequences. Fizzing and crackling sounds are processed to clear and frosty tones and melt into the voice of Søs Gunver Ryberg singing about researching the sound of the glacier body.
The reflection of sunlight on the arctic ice is reproduced by a video projector on a block of ice in the installation.
The sound and video recordings which took place between 74º N and 81º N at Svalbard are from her own artistic research expedition in arctic sound and are the first in a series of compositions.
This Project has received grants from BG Fond, Claus Sørensen Fond and V. Makwarth & Hustru Veronika Makwarth's Musiklegat.
Thanks to sculptor Søren Cip for donating block of ice.
SØS Gunver Ryberg has exhibited sound- and video installations at the Diapason Gallery in NY, the SMart Festival in Michigan, the Istanbul-Biennial, the Stockholm Cultural Festival, the Charlottenborg exhibition hall in Cph, the Center of Photography in Cph, Esbjerg Museum of Modern Art, Wadden Sea Festival, the Roskilde Festival, and at VEGA night club and music venue in Cph.
